This is song that accompanies a poem my Great-Grandfather wrote called "Lamentations". Each musical phrase corresponds to a line from the poem, located below.

Why should I be so sad and blue
When all the skies are bright
I am not refreshed by morning's dew
Nor kissed by stars at night?
Why are my days so dark and drear
My sunbeams rare and few,
My troubles seem hardest to bear
The wildest tales seem true?

Why are my nights empty and long
Though Heaven floods with light,
Passing, but leave no lover's song
Only a Shadow flight?
Why is my joy turned to sorrow,
My dreams tumble and fall
Leaving no face of tomorrow
No joy, just bitter gall?
